This past weekend, I was lucky enough to participate in a charity fishing event on Grand Bahamas. This event was to raise money for the 8 Mile Rock project here on the island for the children’s summer camp. I am still smiling from how much fun we all collectively had and for such a great cause. Thanks to Grand Bahama Shipyard for such a lovely event.

16 boats, teams of 4, going through the Xanadu Channel out to sea, waiting for the airhorn to blast.

All vessels rushing out to their “secret spot” in search of Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Snapper and Grouper. We decided to take a different game plan and stay closer to shore, about only 15 miles out to The Wall and not Tuna Canyon which is 25 miles south of GBI. We dropped the allotted 6 lines, anything more than that is considered commercial fishing.

All geared up and ready to go, and about 6 1/2 hours of absolute nothing, I think we stared to get delirious. Team “Reel Big Fish” wasn’t giving up. Cause right about 1:30 pm, after being up from 5am, it was non stop action. At first we thought everything was Raptured… we saw no fish or birds. Ooo ya, we didn’t use any navigation or fish finders. Our team and captain did it the old fashion way, looking for birds, seaweed and wind direction. Captain Washie is our secret weapon. Plus, Danielle and I were the only woman anglers in the whole competition ![]()

Holy shit, we caught a Mermaid!!! Without giving away to much of our strategy (for next year of course) here is the winning catch by Danielle, almost 37lb Mahi. 12 hours out to sea, you can only imagine the excitement when the boats started to come in for weigh-ins.

A celebratory beer, team Reel Big Fish was ready to relax.

Accepting one of our rewards together as a team: Kayton, Danielle, myself and Captain Washie who had to get home earlier.

The final standings, taken from Freeport News you can also see additional local photos. Finally, we won 3 categories and the memories we will have forever. Go Team!
